WOW! Wouldn’t you just love to lay on the couch and lose weight at the same time?

Well now you can with Ice therapy, otherwise known as Cryotherapy. Sounds like something straight out of a sci-fi movie, but it’s actually a multi-million dollar industry.

I would normally laugh and think it was a bunch on nonsense if I hadn’t tried it myself. In fact, my belly is due for another treatment as we speak.

You can pay the big bucks by going to a professional clinic to get it done, or there are various safe DIY methods. I’ve tried many of them myself with great results. It’s just a matter of doing it, and keeping up a routine.

Many people don’t like being cold, but it’s a small price to pay for a great fat burning natural remedy. Yes, it’s uncomfortable, and yes, it isn’t easy to do, but if you’ve got ingenuity, and you aren’t afraid to dive in and get a little cold, it could work great for your body!

Let’s dive in to the nitty gritty!

WHAT IS IT?

Generally Ice Therapy goes by a few different names. You can call is Cryotherapy, Coolsculpting, or Fat Freezing, but it’s all the same.

Basically all it is, is the process of freezing your fat cells. Once their frozen, they die. Yay! And once dead, they will exit your body like a normal toxin does.

You pee it out.

Yes, it’s gross, but true.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The science behind getting rid of fat by freezing it off, is quite unique. It’s a proven method that actually works. It came from a discovery from kids eating popsicles. Their cheeks developed dimples because of the cold popsicles. The fat died off around their cheeks where the ice was.

You can get this done in a clinic, but it’s very expensive. But, you can effectively do it yourself with an ice pack. I have tried this many times and it really works. It takes about two months to see the difference in your body.

Not only do you lose the fat in your targeted area but it tones saggy skin too. I actually use ice packs directly on my skin. I never use an insulator like a towel between my skin and an ice pack. They say not to do that because you can get frostbite and burn your skin, but I have never had a problem with that.

I like to move the ice packs around, so they don’t get stuck in one place. I find if it feels a bit painful, all I need to do is move it around a little, and then it’s fine.

Not only are there benefits like burning fat and toning your tummy, but there are other benefits from cold therapy as well.

REDUCES INFLAMMATION

We all know that inflammation causes problems in our body. In fact it’s the leading cause of disease. If we can reduce inflammation, we will be healthier all around.

If we have a sore muscle or back pain, the first thing we do is put ice on it. Ice will take the inflammation down so that healing begins.

How many times have we seen ice therapy used in sports. Quite a bit. We seldom understand the implications of cooling down the body.

After a long hard day of work, our entire body is full of inflammation. Stress also causes inflammation. Some people bathe in ice water when they get home, and reduce the inflammation very quickly.

Our body simply functions better when there is little to no inflammation.

BOOSTS IMMUNITY

Did you know that keeping your body cool actually boosts your immunity?

I didn’t know that until I did the research.

It’s kind of like your body telling you, “Help me! I’m cold, I’m in danger and need protecting.” So what happens? Your body goes to bat for you, and protects you.

That’s the simple version of what is happening. There is a lot of science behind it, but for me, that’s all I need to know.

My body is in protection mode so my immunity gets a boost.

Simple at that.

IMPROVES METABOLIC RATE

So what exactly does this mean?

Basically, when you body is cold, it literally is fighting to keep itself warm. That’s hard work. And when this happens, you burn calories.

When you’re more lean, your metabolism will get a boost.

BOOSTS CELL RENEWAL

When you put ice on your skin, that stimulates blood circulation. When your blood circulates, the plasma containing platelets goes to work on cell renewal.

It’s the job of your blood to renew cells. If you have poor circulation, your blood becomes stagnant and won’t be able to do its work.

The best thing for your body is great circulation. Take for example your scalp. If you don’t get blood to your scalp, your hair will die. Yes, you will become bald.

If blood doesn’t circulation through your heart, your heart will die. Blood isn’t just running through your body for no reason. It’s keeping you ALIVE. It’s working on fixing your damaged cells every single day.

So, why not try ice therapy, or at the very least, take a cold shower. Do your cells a favor and get your blood circulating so you will experience cell renewal.

TURNS WHITE FAT INTO BROWN

What the heck is this about?

Basically, when you overeat, you gain weight. That weight is fat, and it’s white. It isn’t used for anything. It just hangs on your body and makes you overweight.

BUT… when you introduce ice, it converts that useless white fat into brown fat. Brown fat is good fat. It’s all over your body, and used for fuel. It’s a good thing to have more brown fat than white fat.

Kind of like white bread versus brown bread. Kind of 😉

The more you introduce ice to your body, the more fat gets converted to brown so you can use it all up as fuel.

How cool is that?

Pun intended 🙂

WHO CAN BENEFIT?

I can tell you that ice therapy has benefited millions of people. Some just do the cold shower, or ice baths every day. Some target problem areas with cool therapy treatments. Some choose the DIY method like myself, and get rid of the belly.

Let me tell you this. Since starting ice therapy, I have noticed my skin on my belly is smoother, less wrinkled, and firmer. And that’s almost immediate after doing ice therapy even after one day. I know… insane, right?

I know they say it takes up to two months to see fat burning results, and for the most part that’s true. The real burn does take that long, because it takes your body a while to get rid of the toxins (the fat) through the normal body processes for that.

But I seriously have experienced first hand, results come quicker than that.

Take for example when you wash your face. If you wash with hot water, your pores open up. They are much bigger. But when you wash your face with cold water, your pores close. When your pores are closed, your skin looks smoother, younger, and more firm.

This should make everyone start washing their face with only cold water.

Getting back to who would benefit from ice therapy, I can say with all sincerity, ME! I am a middle-aged woman, who has had three babies and I wish I would have known about ice therapy way back when I was a postpartum mom.

Your belly will shrink in the cold. Ice therapy with tighten, get rid of stretch marks, and burn up the stubborn fat that hangs around your middle from whatever the cause.

Sometimes it’s just stress that builds fat around your middle. As we age, the stress builds up over the years and your hormones create a protective barrier around your vital organs. Yes, that’s what happens.

A lot of people didn’t know it. They gain weight during difficult times. Maybe a death in the family or job stress, or family stress caused you to put on a few extra pounds around your middle. You thought it was because of overeating, but reality it is stress, and not food at all.

This happened to me when my mom died. I knew I wasn’t overeating. I barely ate anything at all. Yet, about a month later, I had extra weight around my middle. Stress at it’s finest!

And menopause is the worst. Your WHOLE body is under stress from sudden change in your hormones. That makes you gain weight more than anything you’re eating.

So, ice those bellies up, and get rid of the stubborn fat.

HOW DO I DO IT?

As I mentioned briefly, I put ice packs on my belly. I tuck them in my pants and leave them there for a good couple hours sometimes. Yes, right against my skin.

If you are super sensitive, you might want to try a thin towel between your skin and ice pack. But for me, I prefer right on my skin. The colder the better. But I do have to watch it. If I feel a real discomfort, I move the ice packs around.

I think I’ve only once caused a very small patch of frostbite. It wasn’t terrible, but it was redder than other parts of my skin for a couple days. That’s after leaving it on for two hours. So, now I move the packs here and there, and never let it get stuck in one place.

WHERE CAN I DO IT?

Most clinics who do Coolsculpting, are very expensive. The sessions can run anywhere from $750-$1250 per hour. Not many can afford that, but there are many alternatives methods.

Overall, the DIY method trumps by far. It doesn’t target small areas very well like Coolsculpting does. That method squeezes your fat like a vise, in a small area quickly. DIY methods target wider areas, but work just as well.

You may need several ice packs. I’ve found some products that work well to distribute ice evenly around your middle. I’ll post them below.

Overall, I would highly recommend cool therapy. Whether you want to try a small area, like under your chin, or a large area around your middle, you might be pleasantly surprised with the results over time.

Ice Therapy might be just what you’re looking for!

  1. Hello Kathleen. Really encouraging article, thank you. I have been going for cryotherapy and am looking to do a bit of DIY to keep up the results. Can I ask if you do this 2-hour compress on a daily basis or just once in a while? Thank you 🙂
