My ugliest pajamas are actually my favorite.

Let me tell you why.

They absorb!

They absorb because they are made of special moisture-wicking material; a must-have if you suffer from hot flashes during menopause.

Even if you use supplements to calm those flashes, guaranteed you’ll still need something for those nights that you sweat.

I know I did.

Supplements won’t take night sweats completely away. You still have to address the issue. And that’s the fact that you sweat at night. Lots!

The right material is the solution.

I hadn’t heard of moisture-wicking material before, and I’ve been sewing for over 30 years.

It wasn’t until I hit menopause, that I started googling solutions for hot flashes and night sweats that I came across a lovely fabric called, bamboo.

But what exactly is bamboo textiles?

Bamboo textiles come in various forms. You can get natural bamboo fibers woven into cloth or yarn. Traditionally bamboo was just used to stiffen clothing like in bustles and corsets, but nowadays it’s used for all sorts of things.

More importantly, it’s woven into a fabric and used in moisture-wicking products like sportswear or bedding.

Most of us know that cotton is naturally absorbent, but bamboo is more so. It not only holds water, but it keeps it away from your skin somehow.

Don’t ask me the logistics of it, all I know is it actually works.

To put it to the test, I decided to buy some natural bamboo stretch fabric.

And this is my story.

I went to my local fabric store because I wanted to feel the fabric before I purchased it. Yes, I could have ordered it online way cheaper, but it was important to me to feel it against my skin.

At first glance, it didn’t look any different from other fabrics I’ve purchased. It was really stretchy, but I’ve worked with stretch numerous times, and that didn’t bother me.

There wasn’t a high selection of colors, just navy, and red, but that didn’t matter to me. I chose red, and almost died when I saw the price. I’m not going to tell you it, because it’s not relevant to the story, and will probably be twice the amount I paid when you read this.

Because it was so ridiculously priced, I only purchased one meter of it. It was 150 cm wide, so I thought I could squeeze a pair of pajamas out of it no problem.

That was my purpose for getting the bamboo. It was supposed to be the best material to wear for hot-flashes and I was going to make myself a pair of pajamas to find out.

Well, because I’m a cheapskate, and didn’t want to pay for more than one meter, I didn’t have enough to make the pajamas properly.

You will laugh, but I had to piece the top together.

As I said before… they are the ugliest pajamas I’ve ever had.

But do they work?

I didn’t use a pattern and just created my own. The pants were crafted like leggings, and they are sooooo comfy. The top is like a muscle shirt.

When I started running out of material, I started to panic until I realized, every piece counts. I serged the top together piece by piece until it looked half-decent.

Well, it doesn’t look half decent, but it did the job.

The first night I wore my moisture-wicking pajamas, I had mild night sweats.

As you ladies know, it comes and goes.

So, I continued wearing my bright red pajamas much to the chagrin of my husband. He likes to find every opportunity to tease me, and this was one.

But I kept on wearing my bamboo creation until I had a really bad night of sweating. Like dripping wet night sweats.

Normally, when wearing other types of pajamas, the sweat would drip down my breast area and dampen my top, and sheets.

Sometimes I would have to get up in the middle of the night, change my top, and then try to get back to sleep. Emphasis on the ‘try’ part, because as most menopausal women know, once you’re woken up in the middle of the night, it’s not easy to go back to sleep.

So, that disruption is one I wanted to eliminate.

With my new bamboo pajamas, that disruption was eliminated.

I couldn’t believe it!

It seems to absorb every drop of sweat, and it kept it off my skin so I didn’t feel like I was freezing. That rollercoaster of sweating and freezing throughout the night is unbearable.

But my ugly red bamboo pajamas did the trick.

And when I wash them and take them out of the washer, they are really heavy. At first, I thought, What the heck is this? Why didn’t my washer ring them out well enough? My washer is new and should have.

But then I realized, they just absorb really really well.

And when I took them out of the dryer, everything else was completely dry except for… you guessed it, my ugly red bamboo pajamas.

It actually takes me twice as long to dry them, than normal things.

But I’m not worried. That just proves how absorbent they are.

So ladies, if you want to get a good night’s sleep, buy yourself a set of moisture-wicking pajamas, and never freeze because of your night sweats ever again. Instead, you will be able to laugh at menopause like I do. In fact, I even wrote a funny book about it called, The Funny Side of Menopause.

There are also ways to try and remedy night sweats by taking natural supplements, which I go over in my book, Menopause Maggie. But if you want a quick solution for night sweats, and you don’t want to change your top or your bedding in the middle of the night ever again, go for the bamboo sleepwear, and bedding.

Get a good night’s sleep!

And not only that, why not buy clothing made of bamboo to wear throughout the day. Wouldn’t it be wonderful not to have to worry about embarrassing hot flashes causing sweat marks on your clothing?

Or you can wear a bamboo tank top under all sorts of nice tops and never have sweat issues.

Tank tops are great for dressing in layers. Perfect for menopause!

And if you want to go one step further, you can actually get bamboo sheets. That’s my next step. I always thought the reason people get bamboo sheets is because of the thread count and the nice feel of the fabric.

You get bamboo sheets so that if you sweat, you won’t be uncomfortable.

So the next time you go shopping, look for products made out of bamboo.

But, if you want, you can also buy some bamboo fabric and make your own pair of moisture-wicking pajamas.

But, a word of caution… Make sure you buy enough material so they don’t look as ugly as mine.

Or buy a pattern and follow the directions so you don’t run into trouble like I did.

Happy sleeping 🙂
