REFLECTION

When we’re young, we think we have all the time in the world.

We live care-free, chasing one adventure after another.

We get married, have children, and still think we have an eternity to fulfill our dreams.

Then we hit 50 and realize we didn’t have all the time we thought we did.

We realize time is short and we better do something with the little time we have left.

More importantly, we want to matter.

I have dreams I thought I’d be able to achieve by now, but they didn’t come to pass. I always thought I’d get to that bucket-list sooner or later.

But later was always put off for tomorrow.

Then one day, you wake up and your hair is grey, you face is wrinkled, and you realize you’ve wasted so much time thinking about your goals, instead of actually doing something about it.

When menopause hits you, you start going through a process just like this, except your hormones make it feel even worse. Depression sets in and you start feeling sorry for yourself, thinking there is no hope for your dreams.

You start thinking negatively and you just go through the motions of life. You feel as though you have no purpose anymore. What was once important to you, is no longer important because your life has changed so much.

Some people even feel like they turn into a whole different person after menopause. And most don’t find it’s an improvement either. It’s sad.

We become sad.

Not only have we lost our purpose, our position as mom, but we no longer feel like a woman. We struggle with our identity, and we struggle with our bodies, our hormones, and getting old.

Mid-life can be very hard, and most people don’t understand just how difficult it is. Instead they give you a smirk when you mention the word menopause, as if it’s a dirty word.

We often can’t find anyone to relate to when we enter this difficult transition in our lives. Women just don’t want to talk about it. Instead we keep the hardships and difficulties to ourselves, and we become even more depressed.

We don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel.

We don’t see that there is still a lot of living left for the middle-aged woman. We don’t give ourselves permission to dream again.

We forget how.

Instead, we spend our life just existing.

Our main objective is just to make it through the day with no particular purpose.

Many of us feel forced into the workforce, doing jobs we hate, just to pay the bills.

We don’t realize there is help out there.

And that help is what I want to talk about today.

It’s something I am passionate about.

It’s something I discovered, and want to pass on to you.

I didn’t think I mattered to anyone. I thought my children defined me until they grew up and moved away. Then I was faced to see the real me, the me that I had hidden behind family and responsibility.

When you strip that away, what do you have?

I realized I was a woman who was once a little girl who dreamt about being a teacher, a dressmaker, a princess, a nurse, an astronaut, or whatever the heck I wanted to be.

And I had forgotten her.

I left her in the dust of my busy life, like she didn’t even matter.

Everyone is faced with questions at the end of their lives.

Did I matter?

Did I love?

Did I leave my mark?

How will people remember me?

Some people are faced with this question way before old age sets in. Near death experiences, like car crashes, heart attacks, cancer, surgeries, a health crisis, all make us ask this question.

As we face this question, we start wondering how to change our lives to become the best version of ourselves so we leave something worthwhile behind when we die.

Our legacy!

And it is that legacy that prompted me to learn to overcome my difficulties, and push forward to a better me.

I started searching for motivation.

If you know me, you know I google everything and I search YouTube all the time. I’d like to think most people are like me, but they’re not.

It’s shocking to find out there are people who don’t know how to google or even what google is. There are some who don’t even know what the internet is.

Yes! There are!

I’ll just cut to the chase and tell my story.

I was feeling down one day and decided to google motivational speakers. I found a few, but only one I recognized. His name is Tony Robbins.

I listened to him almost every day, and he’s the one that helped me realize I needed to get back to my fighting weight.

On one of his Youtube videos he was talking about getting healthy, and his quote, “Get back to your fighting weight’ actually made me cry.

I sat there with that extra poundage around my middle and sobbed, wondering how on earth I was supposed to lose weight, become healthy, and change my life.

But then I realized, it’s all about me, and what my brain tells me.

My brain told me to get a stationary bike.

It was a step in the right direction.

I posted Tony Robbins motivational quote right on the front of my bike, and read it out loud to myself every time I worked out on my bike.

I did that routine for a while, then I gave up.

Yup!

Short lived.

I decided I’d rather walk outside.

So, I did.

I loved the scenery outside. It was much better than being inside.

The point was to just do something, anything, that got me moving and headed in the right direction.

I continued to listen to as many motivational videos I could find.

I decided to fill my head full of positive things so I would keep on track. And that became a habit. It’s crucial to form good habits when you want to change your life.

If you want something hard enough, the best way to do it is to fill your head full of positivity.

And to follow a plan.

My plan ultimately brought me to other weight-loss techniques like eating better, discovering Intermittent fasting, and going to the gym.

Working out more and having a healthy thought pattern, really helped me.

Today, I listen to a few different motivational speakers. Sure, I cut my teeth on Tony Robbins inspiring messages, but I discovered another great motivational speaker that I listen to regularly as well. His name is Brendon Burchard.

I’ve learnt a lot from him.

His journey to success started when his highschool sweetheart cheated on him, then broke up with him, leaving him heartbroken.

Suddenly his life had no meaning without her.

Brendon and his girlfriend were one of those couples in highschool that you thought would be together forever. They were joined at the hip and everyone’s favorite couple. But then life gave him a curve ball.

He fell into a depression and contemplated suicide after the breakup. When he had almost hit rock bottom, he got into a life-altering car accident that left him with a brain injury.

He had to learn everything all over again.

And that’s where he found his calling.

Now Brendon Burchard motivates thousands of people on a daily basis. He holds conferences, and inspires so many people to change their lives, including myself.

He teaches people not only to just exist, but how to have a ‘charged’ life and change yourself into the person you were meant to be.

I get so inspired when I hear Brendon Burchard. He provides free motivational videos on YouTube. But he’s also written books, podcast, and classes. He runs a High-performance academy and speaks in front of millions.

And he started out with nothing.

His first book ‘Life’s Golden Ticket’ was rejected by publishers so many times, he almost gave up. He didn’t know how to write but did it anyway. He quit a big corporate job to write, and sought after his dreams even after going bankrupt.

He truly is inspiring, and if you can’t learn from someone like this, then you can’t learn at all.

I for one, want to learn.

I want to change my life into something of value.

I want to do something that matters.

I want to matter!

At the end of my life, I want to be able to say, “I lived! I really lived!”

In the morning when I wake up, I turn on Youtube, and listen to Brendon Burchard telling me to keep trying. He never fails to motivate me!

And there are more motivational speakers out there.

Joel Olsteen is another one I listen to on a regular basis. If you’re a person of faith like I am, you’ll really like his faith-based motivation. Even if you’re not religious, his funny, light-hearted motivational topics are still relevant.

Motivational speakers can also come from regular people. Joel Olsteen, Toni Robbins, and Brendan Burchard are regular people, but more like public figures. We learn from them, but we can also learn from everyday people, like a friend or family member.

Just because they aren’t big shots doesn’t mean you can’t learn from them.

I know a few on facebook that I follow.

Let them teach you how to be positive. That’s where it starts. Become grateful for everything you have, and then start working on your attitude.

That’s what I did.

I had to realize I was negative. I had to realize I was the only one that could change me. I had to realize if I wanted to change my life and attitude, I had to become more positive.

Once I understood that, change started happening.

It can happen for you too.

As a menopausal woman, change defines us, but it shouldn’t control us.

We control change, and we need to make sure it’s positive.
