Pooping Yellow Water

WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN WITH IF?

When you do intermittent fasting, your digestive system takes a break. Food does not need to be digested, so your system shuts down temporarily.

That’s a good thing.

It allows healing to take place in the gut and fixes your digestive system. Intermittent fasting will help the body heal over time, but each time you fast, you must eventually start eating again.

That restarting process is what causes you to poop yellow water, for lack of a better word.

Like an old abandoned well, the water stays stagnant at the bottom. It becomes rancid and concentrated to some degree because of non-movement.

In order to get a well to pump again, you must prime it. Once primed, the water comes up to the surface, then starts spitting and spurting. That explosion of water is often very dirty and yellow or orange.

I use this analogy to help you understand that our digestive system is very similar to a well. If we don’t use our digestive system, and it remains dormant for short-term, stagnant waters will become rancid.

When we start our digestive system up again, we must prime it. That means different things to different people. For me, it means ensuring there’s enough fibre to create what I like to call a ‘bowel plug’ of sorts.

I take a spoonful of ground-up flax and a couple of cups of water when I break a fast. Before I eat anything, I always ensure that I have ground flax first.

It creates a wedge in the system so that all the food that I start eating again doesn’t fall right out. I know that sounds weird but it’s the truth.  If I start eating a bowl of cooked vegetables after a long fast, it will go right through me unless I create a “bowel plug”.

Years of intermittent fasting experience has taught me how to break a fast properly. I’ve tried many other types of foods but nothing works as well as ground flax.

Once I create this “bowel plug” and I start eating like normal after a fast, I only experienced minor diarrhea. On rare occasion, I experience a small explosion if you know what I mean, but that’s the end of it.

The pump is primed.

I can now eat whatever I want without worrying about pooping yellow water.

WHAT TO EAT?

I break a fast with ground flax. What that does is the fibre creates a“bowel plug” of sorts, that prevents continuous diarrhea.

Once that is in place, I can start eating anything I want after a fast. I’ve even had big meals and have gone out for supper.

I’ve had pizza and other types of fast food as well without fearing that I’d be running to the toilet. As long as I take my ground flax beforehand, I’m good to go.

WHEN WILL IT STOP?

If diarrhea is persistent after you break a fast, you may need to fast for a shorter window or stop altogether for a while.

Your body shouldn’t continuously poop yellow water.

It will eventually stop and should be more than a couple of small bouts. Just make sure that you create a bowel plug inside the digestive tract, to hold your food in.

I like to use ground-up flax, but others have used chia seeds or even good old-fashioned Metamucil.

Whatever you use, make sure it’s fibrous enough to create a ‘bowel plug’ and you’ll be good to go until the next fast.
