When your precious little bundle of joy arrives, you want to be prepared. If you are considering sewing some things for baby but have no idea where to find what you might need, then look no further. This blog is all about baby sewing supplies.

A simple, all-in-one guide for baby sewing patterns is all you need to get started sewing for your baby. We will discuss where to buy sewing patterns and supplies for your new addition as we consider what the largest online marketplace in the world has to offer.

Amazon has often been overlooked when it comes to sewing, but I am here to tell you they have an abundance of patterns and supplies. Traditional fabric stores are not the only place to buy sewing patterns for babies. In fact, they have quality items at lower costs the majority of the time.

I have been frustrated with my local fabric store lately. It seems the prices are always jacked right up, often three times the cost of what it would be online. Take for example a baby quilt I was considering sewing for my grandchild. It was a few years ago, so the quilt is already made, but my point is, I refused to buy the quilt-batting for three times what it was worth.

I know this has happened to others, and it is a shame. Not only does it make your project unaffordable, but it downright deters people from sewing for themselves. Certainly, these overpriced patterns and supplies discourage people from starting their own sewing businesses as well. If you have to pay over $200 bucks for the fabric just to make a quilt, imagine how much you’de have to sell that quilt for. No wonder home sewing businesses are seldom profitable when buying from your local fabric store.

But I’m not here to tell you about starting a sewing business. I just used my own experience as an example, to encourage buying sewing supplies online. It is more affordable, easier, and less time-consuming.

So, let’s dive into Amazon!

By the way, Crunchy Menopause is a review site that receives compensation from ShareASale, Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, eBay, and other affiliate networks whose products I review. The opinions are my own. That means if you purchase something through one of my affiliate links, I get a little bit of sewing money.

PATTERNS

When considering patterns online, you really have to be careful with sizing. However, because you are sewing for baby, you really don’t have to worry about sizing as much as if you were sewing for yourself.

Regardless of size, the TOP FIVE pattern companies are all you need. Don’t even bother with patterns from other lesser-known pattern companies on the internet. They are not as reputable and may give you a headache. Personally, I don’t like downloadable patterns either and would recommend staying away from them. Piecing them together is NOT fun!

Just stick to the following patterns companies below. You can’t go wrong with them!

1. Butterick

2. McCalls

3. Simplicity

4. Burda

5. Vogue

FABRIC

When considering fabric for baby items you will want to choose something soft. The leading contenders are flannelette, Minky, t-shirt knit, and blanket fleece. But really it depends on what project you are going to make.

I have made so many baby quilts I can’t even count. Some quilts were made with traditional quilting cotton, while others were made with softer materials. I might add that the baby quilts made with fat quarters or jelly rolls, were not as favorable because they are hard and scratchy.

Yes, that is the reality. When you sew a quilt with 100% quilting cotton, it’s not going to be soft, it’s going to be cute. If you’re going for cute, then, by all means, get the most amazing quilting cotton you can find. And there are many cute kinds of cotton on the market, from dinosaurs to trucks, and everything in between. Just take your pick.

But if you are going for softness, stick with flannel and Minky, or some other soft material.

The difference is practicality. If it’s going to be worn, then definitely go for brushed cotton or soft t-shirting, or blanket fleece.

Below is an assortment of fabric that would be good for the baby. You can purchase it through the following Amazon affiliate links.

1. Flannelette

2. Minky

3. Fat Quarters (100% quilting cotton)

4. Jelly Rolls (100% quilting cotton)

NOTIONS

Most home sewers know what the word ‘notion’ means but for the benefit of beginners, it is defined as all the little things you will need to put your sewing project together.

You will need buttons and lace. Thread and zippers. Bias binding and iron-on labels. That kind of thing.

When you sew for your baby, depending on the project, you will have to buy all the ‘notions’ required on the back of the pattern. For example, if you want to make a christening dress, you will need to get the allotted amount of lace required. These ‘notions’ are usually noted on the back of the pattern.

Take a look at some of the notions I found on Amazon. Quite an assortment.

2. Buttons

3. Zippers

4. Bias Tape

5.Thread

SUPPLIES

Sewing supplies are defined differently from notions. Supplies are what we mean by all the things you’ll need to complete your project ‘outside’ of what your pattern says you need.

You will need things like sewing machine needles, stick pins, and bobbins. That kind of thing.

Take a peek at what Amazon has to offer.

1. Needles

2. Bobbins

3. Stick Pins

SEWING MACHINES

Ah yes, what would your project be without a sewing machine? You wouldn’t be able to sew it together. Well, actually you could. Our ancestors did it all by hand, but just in case you don’t want to be doing that, I’ve selected a few good quality sewing machines on Amazon for you below.

1. Single Needle Machines

2. Sergers

ACCESSORIES

You will need some accessories if you’re going to sew for baby. You will need things like scissors, cutting mats, rotary cutters, yardsticks, and all that jazz. If you haven’t got yourself these things yet, you might want to stock up. You’ll need these things for every sewing project down the road.

Babies grow and I’m sure you’ll want to sew other things through your child’s life.

Sewing is an investment and if it’s your passion, then stock up and fill that sewing room with the things you’ll need to complete your projects.

FURNITURE

You will need a table to sew on, preferably large enough to cut your pattern out on. You don’t want to squat on the floor or bend down too low when sewing for baby. Likely you will be pregnant when sewing your projects so be prepared.

A good sewing table goes a long way, as does a good sewing cabinet.

Take a look at these.

I hope that was helpful! Sewing for your baby is memorable and rewarding! Congratulations on your little bundle of joy!

Thank you for reading! Have a GREAT day and KEEP ON SEWING!
